Hey there, ladies! Let's talk about something that's all too familiar to us during that time of the month: PMS anxiety. Yep, you heard it right. It's not just about cramps, bloating, and mood swings. Anxiety decides to join the party too. Like, seriously 🤷‍♀️, can't we catch a break?

Now, I may not be one of those who suffer from killer cramps or bloating. Nope, my body likes to shake things up and gift me with anxiety instead. It's like a surprise package every month. It's like a tornado of nervousness that sweeps through my life, leaving productivity and peace in its wake.

But what's the deal? Why does anxiety decide to crash the period party?

What is PMS Anxiety

Here's the scoop, my friends. Even researchers are scratching their heads about the exact causes of premenstrual anxiety. It's like a cosmic riddle that even they can't crack. What we do know is that hormonal fluctuations play a major role in this rollercoaster ride of emotions. These hormonal shifts can trigger the notorious premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or even premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). And guess what? Anxiety becomes the star of the show during this time.

Picture this: our hormone levels go on a wild rollercoaster ride during the luteal phase of our menstrual cycle. Our bodies gear up for pregnancy by pumping up those hormone levels after ovulation. But if it's not baby time, those hormone levels take a nosedive, and we get our period. It's like a hormonal circus happening inside us.

Now, these hormonal acrobatics can mess with our brain's neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, the mood regulators of our party. They get all wonky, leaving us feeling anxious, depressed, and as moody as a cat on a hot tin roof. Thanks, hormones! You're doing a bang-up job.

Here's the kicker though: PMS hits different people differently. Scientists haven't quite figured out why, but they suspect that some folks may be more sensitive to hormonal fluctuations due to genetics. So, we can't blame ourselves for being anxious queens during this time. It's in our genes, literally.

How To Manage PMS Anxiety

Now that we've uncovered the mysterious workings behind PMS anxiety, let's dive into some strategies to manage this unwelcome visitor. Just a heads up, I'm no expert, but as a cutie with severe PMS anxiety issues, I've been on a journey of finding ways to cope. These babies have worked wonders for me (well, about 75% of the time), and I'm still learning new ways to tame the anxiety beast. So, let me share them with you.

1. Get moving, girl!

Exercise, dance, or take a leisurely stroll in nature. Trust me, any kind of movement will help soothe that anxiety surge. Plus, studies even show that aerobic exercise can be a game-changer in reducing PMS symptoms. So, put on your favorite beats, move that body, and let the anxiety fade away.

2. Beauty sleep is a must!

Seriously, don't skimp on those Zs! If you don't get proper sleep, you'll only end up sabotaging your day. Establish a sleep routine where you hit the hay and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Of course, we all slip up now and then, so be gentle with yourself. Just aim for consistency during your workdays.

3. Say adios to smoking and cut down on alcohol consumption

Research from 2019 has found a link between smoking and an increased risk of developing PMDD and PMS. And while we're at it, let's address alcohol too. It turns out that alcohol can worsen anxiety, so it's best to keep it in check.

4. Boost your body with vitamins

Calcium and vitamin B-6 have been known to ease the physical and psychological symptoms of PMS. so load up on foods rich in these nutrients or consider supplements. Your body will thank you.

5. Music is magic

Whenever my mind starts to spin with anxiety, I turn to my trusty playlist of calming lo-fi tunes. It's like a warm, musical hug for my soul. Find your jam, let the melodies wrap you in serenity, and let that anxiety melt away.

6. Ah, the power of a good scent.

Lately, I've been obsessed with scented candles that transport me to a world of tranquility. Find your favorite scent and let it work its magic on your mood. It's like a mini spa day for your mind.

So, there you have it, my fabulous ladies. A handful of strategies to tame that pesky PMS anxiety. Give them a whirl and find what works best for you. Remember, we're in this together, and we're stronger than those pesky hormones. Let's slay the anxiety dragon and conquer our periods like the queens we are!

P.S.: If you find that your symptoms persist despite making lifestyle changes, or if you suspect that you may be dealing with PMDD or PMS, it's definitely worth reaching out to your doctor for further guidance and support. They can provide valuable insights and help you explore appropriate treatment options. Remember, seeking professional help is an important step towards finding relief and improving your overall well-being.
